Mission + History

Mission + History
Founded in 1997, David Johnston Architects (“DJA”) is a full-service architecture and planning firm emphasizing quality design and hands-on service for residential, commercial and mixed-use projects. Focusing predominantly on residential architecture at its beginnings, the firm was guided by a simple principle – ‘to create, livable and vibrant residences within the vision and context of the surrounding environment.’ Over a decade later with two busy offices in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado, DJA is now leading projects of varying scope and scale throughout the country and beyond our nation’s borders. As the firm has grown and diversified, the original vision has also evolved –‘to create sustainable, livable and vibrant places by finding a balance between the social, environmental, economic and aesthetic contexts of each new and unique location.’

Today DJA proudly offers a wide range of services to provide a holistic approach to the general real estate process – from design through development, ultimately achieving a more sustainable product that satisfies the client’s vision as well as the community, environmental and economic contexts of an area. These services include land-use planning, urban design, financial & development analyses, interior design and of course the backbone of the company, architectural design and administration. This integrated approach allows the firm to increase the quality and efficiency of a project from conception through completion, ultimately achieving an economy of scale that will be essential as we move into the future.

With two licensed architects supported by a team of designers, planners, project managers and production personnel, DJA is well positioned to handle the diverse range of challenges any project may pose, regardless of scope and scale. With a focus on sustainability, LEED accredited designers and associates with academic degrees in sustainable design and development guide the DJA process by way of the fundamental principles of green design. Conscious planning, architecture, building practices and material use ultimately fulfills the firm’s mission of creating sustainable buildings, places and above all else, communities of people.
